Kobarid, and this area of what is now called Slovenia was the site of many long and historically significant battles in WWI. There is an excellent museum of the war effort in town. It is where Ernest Hemmingway wrote 'A Farewell to Arms' concerning the Italian's fighting the Austrian-Hungarian battalions. The church at the top of the hill contains the mortal remains of over 7,000 Italian soldiers from the horrific battles in the surrounding Alpine mountains
